Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS)

Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) use a series of water management practices and facilities to drain surface water in an ethical and sustainable manner. SUDS supersede conventional drainage practices where water is routed through pipes to a watercourse.

Effective water management practices include:

  • Mitigating accidents that cause pollution
  • Reducing activities that cause pollution
  • Oil tank bundling
  • Reducing the use of materials that cause pollution
  • Harvesting water

Constructed facility arrangements include permeable surfaces, filter and infiltration trenches, detention basins, beneath-ground storage, filter strips, swales, ponds and wetlands. Alternative facilities, such as proprietary products with hydraulic control systems or silt trap arrangements, also exist. These facilities may include materials that promote absorption of polluting oils and toxic metals.
